Question about two copies of Stradivarius, 1900?
I have been given a violin, and out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much it is worth.
The back story:
It was given to my great grandfather in 1900 as a wedding present- his wife found it in a pawn shop, and bought it for thirty dollars. He played at many dances throughout his life, and then passed it on to his son, my grandfather, who in turn, passed it down to my father, who has bequeathed it to me.
During it’s run in our family it has sustained a surface crack from the right side of the bottom to the “backwards ’s’ thing” [I quite honestly don't know what those are called], and some weathering.
I have taken it to several “experts” and they tell me it has one of the most gorgeous tones they have heard, so I know that tone-wise, it’s still in good shape.
Oh, and the other violin has less wear, but the tone is just a little less than what the other has.
How much do you think…? Or have I not given enough information?
You need to find a music shop that does professional appraisals. That protects both you and the buyer if you decide to sell.
